REWRITING black & brown nature narratives of the south

JOIN OUR JOURNEY

Diverse Stories & Boundless Adventures

Changing Perspectives and Amplifying Voices Through

At Color My Outdoors, we’re rewriting the outdoor narrative by centering the experiences and legacies of Black and Brown communities. Focused in the Southeastern United States – where Black and Brown voices are most prominent yet least visible – our work reshapes the industry from the ground up, embedding diverse voices and cultural heritage into the core of the outdoor experience while setting the stage for a more inclusive future.

As a resource for diverse-led outdoor organizations, we provide tools, opportunities, and connections that foster collaboration and growth. We empower individuals and organizations to succeed through job development, skill-building programs, intentional storytelling, and networking opportunities.

our impact

what we do

Our work has profound, long-term significance. By helping Black and Brown communities re-establish their connection with nature and the earth, we nurture both personal and collective well-being while contributing to the health of the planet.

As a grassroots 501(c)(3) organization, we advance our mission through four key Pillars of Impact: Cultivating Leaders, Changing Perceptions, Building Skills & Confidence, and Collaborating Toward Change. While our reach spans the nation, we focus our efforts in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia, creating transformative change across the Southeast.

what we do

A grassroots 501(c)(3) organization, Color My Outdoor’s regional mission is designed to shift nature’s narrative by Cultivating Leaders, Changing Perceptions, Building Skills & Confidence, and Collaborating Toward Change.

The nonprofit work is based solely in the United States with a focus on the Southeast Region — those states in the Jim Crow South opposed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited segregation in public places, including state and local parks.

Our six hub locations to live out our work include North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia.

By fostering partnerships with mission-aligned organizations, promoting representation in decision-making, engaging in restorative justice conversations, and using inclusive language, we strive to challenge stereotypes and reshape the narrative of the outdoors. Together, we envision a future where nature is a space of belonging, empowerment, and joy for all.
